Google Reader!

Raj on August 25th, 2006

I found an interesting, wonderful and useful site (tool) on the web. It is “Google Reader”, a beta version from Google.

I am lazy to browse updates in web sites, mainly news related stuff. I forget to read updated news when I browse the net. Google Reader makes this simple. GR is based on a new tool on web, called RSS Feeds and comes in three versions.

Rich Site Summary (RSS 0.91)
RDF Site Summary (RSS 0.9 and 1.0)
Really Simple Syndication (RSS 2.0)

GR is like a newsletter with all updates information. Wait!! Do not get scared that, this will come to your Inbox every day. However, it works similar to a newsletter.

RSS Feed uses XML (eXtensible Markup Language) technology. Single / many RSS feed files are available in any site (say a news site). You need to subscribe this feeds to your RSS Feed Reader or Aggregator. Then, whenever you log in to it, GR takes you to that site and fetches the new updated feed from the RSS feed and displays those items, which you have not read.

Today, most of the sites are providing this facility. Many free tools (RSS Feed Reader/Aggregator) are also available on net to read these RSS Feeds.

Google Reader promises; Simple, User friendly and Scalable interface.

Google Reader provides online Aggregator.

To access Google Reader, it is not required to have Google account!

Even if you do not have Gmail id, you can use Google Reader.

Go to http://reader.google.com/

A wonderful Flash demo is available on ‘How to use Google Reader’ by Andy Wibbels. Do not forget to switch on your speaker.

for testing you can use my blog RSS feeds.

Yahoo! Avatars Thank you for Sara’s Comment which forced me to post this entry.

Do you like the above Avatar ?

I was wondering how this avatar system works. So just going through the Avatar pages, trying to create new avatar and analyzing how it changes the image depends on click.

Its really cool and very interesting. Developed with Flash and html link .

This Avatar in my profile, shows a Prince/hero just landed in a island after a victory. so you can see the shower of ribbons etc.

I don’t know what is the meaning of 1620! Anybody know what is 1620?

Fox inside Browser War.

Raj on September 27th, 2005

Extensive usage of Internet world over started the war of browsers. As the Internet usage is growing faster, the threats like the hacking, security, virus etc are also growing proportionately. The requirement of a browser’s supporting system also increased. Many companies started promising their browser as the best. In this war, Internet Explorer from Microsoft dominated the field for many decades.

To beat this product, many companies created their own standards to make their browser a mark. Main drawback with IE (Internet Explorer), as Bill Gates once explained, ” HTML is our data type”. Yes, from the Windows version of 98, IE is part of the OS kernel. It means you cannot un-install IE from the Window OS. IE is so much customizable that you can even access API of the Windows, even by using JavaScript, a client side scripting program. In this customizable environment, many types of software can be installable into the OS easily. IE uses local operating system files like DLLs, by which any program from Internet can be easily installed into the operating system. Also in market, as free, plug-ins are available for IE which may be downloaded and plugged-in into IE easily which are mostly dangerous that it can crash your system.

Mozilla Firefox, a browser primarily designed for search to be secure, fast and customizable. As per expert’s opinion, it is the safe browser available in market today. As it does not contain any vulnerable attachments like ActiveX components, which are often used to install Spyware on IE. Firefox is developed using a XML like language called XUL, which is mainly used for the browser customizing. Mozilla Firefox Browser is still in developmental stage with the involvement of a huge community of volunteer coders. The coding is monitored for any vulnerability check, and if found any, it is corrected and an update made available in days or sometimes hours, to avoid the bugs of IE.

Firefox uses the powerful rendering engine Gecko, which is found in all Mozilla products. Gecko has superb support for all those features, which any web developer loves to have such flexibility. It’s rendering is accurate and fast.

Mozilla Firefox Browser has a vast space for customizing features like themes and extensions. Themes, like skins in many other applications, give the browser a whole new look. Users can customize the browser’s look and feel into pre-developed themes available in Mozilla sites. Extensions are even better; anyone can custom build, to make the browser perform something special. Some extensions like, checking the Gmail account for new emails, blocking all ads, yahoo search bar, Google search bar etc. It is a vast place to choose themes and extensions today for Firefox. Firefox has an automatic updating tool, which finds the new updates of browser theme and extensions.

Tabbed browsing is the common feature readily available with Firefox, which reduces your desktop clutter by keeping all of your open web pages within Firefox main window. Experts’ opinion that, this will speed up your machine by not creating multiple instances of a same application, where all the tabs inside a window works as thread rather that an individual process. Mozilla Firefox Browser offers popup blocking by default.

Just try it out :)
